LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the social network for professionals, and is thought to be a clutter-free website.   With features like career connections, digital references, company profiles with groups, and a great history tool of past employers, this is one of the first places employers will do a quick background and reference check after first contact.
LinkedIn groups are a great networking tool for making the first connection. With the ability to post group messages with comments, it becomes a simple task to find someone in a common field. There is also a a great connection finder, in order to discover mutual friends.  Based on your network, this will allow you to develop new relationships with local experts in your field.

LinkedIn has been treated as the most professional and respected of the mainstream social networks. While we agree with this statement, LinkedIn cannot be treated as an end-all for job seeking on the internet.  Keep a list of current and past endevours, as well as references and contact info on LinkedIn. It is a great way to contact recruiters and members of the Human Resources realm, but it is not the easiest of networks to make quick connections.

Treat your LinkedIn profile as an outstanding online resume. We do not encourage posting online for security reasons, but this is a great alternative.

LinkedIn is the most static of the social networks that can be used to harness a career connection.  This service can be used a ‘homebase’ or place to direct all of your other networks as a static landing page.
