Facebook has revolutionized the world of social networking. With a superior search feature, friend tagging, a built in messenger service, photo hosting, and poking, it is the largest social network and therefore the most powerful. Facebook is the best way to connect to Highschool and College friends from the past, as well as connect with new people using the referral tool.
Although new job hunters stereotypically stay away from Facebook, manipulating this tool can increase your visibility. As legend states, employers do not want to see drugs and alcohol within Facebook albums, and that this can determine a hiring status. It is very important to keep a respectable profile, but you are more likely to find a job through someone you know, or someone 2 degrees away than coldcalling a posting that you find on the internet or in a newspaper.
What the rest of the world does not understand, is that Facebook is King in the college coed life. Facebook provides unofficial student directories, nightlife calendaring and party planning, organization and outreach for student groups, homework help through friends, and most importantly a way to record college history through a timeline.
Facebook is a great tool immediately following college to build a contact list of people in your field. Use public Facebook “wall” posting to raise awareness of your job search and skills so that others may view it. Be sure to link to your personal website for further discovery, and allow for at least part of your profile to be visible to all users.
Facebook Status Updates: Although Facebook has evolved over the years, status updates are still relative to the past, unlike Twitters current and future thoughts. These status updates will alert your friends as to likes and disklikes, relationship status’s, tagged pictures, and new friendships that have been forged.
