There have been countless posts about the coming of social media and what it means, mostly in the abstract. But right now, social media provides a practical use job hunting.
Your social networking activity is basically your own personal cloud that you can pluck for your own benefit. Most of the jobs that you will get in your life will not be from a classified ad or a job ad. You will have found out about them from your personal network – virtual and physical. Social media creates a bigger network, allowing you to connect with more people and to find out about more job opportunities.

Many Web 2.0 pundits have been decrying the loss of privacy in the Web 2.0 age, as well as sending out warning signs to control how much information you allow out there about yourself. Now, the focus is shifting to how you can mange your personal brand message on social media sites and use them to grow your career.

So, how can you use social media to find a job?

Answer: DONT.

There are significant pressures added when you inquire for a job through a friend. Both your names are on the line because the friend is no longer supporting just their own self, and since you are the new applicant, you will have to keep up to your resume

The purpose of social media is to increase your network of contacts and have employers find you through friends, not you finding them. Social networks raise transparency about personalities and skills, which has never been available before. If you convince a friend to ‘put your name in the running’ for a new job, you are just forcing the system to work in your favor, which many not happen.

I would compare this to a phone call marketer versus a social network advertisement box: one is forced, the other is voluntary. The key is to manage your New School Resume to become visible to your friend’s company in order to get yourself in, instead of using the person as a tool.

The beauty of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin are that virtual hierarchy’s can be created to show connections. Harness these connections to raise your awareness with the target company, instead of directly asking them to offer an interview.

Last week I wrote a guest blog post over at What Would Dad Say, talking about how older job seekers might need to think like 13-year-olds to succeed in job interviews today. But over the past couple days, I started thinking about all the ways we should NOT repeat behaviors from times gone by. Old-school resume writing machine

Specifically, we need to ditch at least 10 of the old-school resume and cover letter rules that were popular back in the ’70s, ’80s, and even into the ’90s.

Here’s a fun little retrospective of 10 outdated resume and/or cover letter guidelines from the past few decades, and the new rules that have replaced them:

2009 will be an unprecedented time for workers in the US, with many people losing their jobs through no fault of their own. This will ripple economically to other countries as well. No one’s really safe. I wanted to offer some ideas ahead of the mess.

I’ve written Using the Social Web to Find Work as a free ebook for you to download and share with others. It includes ideas and information from [chrisbrogan.com], and takes you from the specifics of using LinkedIn to your benefit, into some ideas on how to grow and nurture your social networks ahead of a need for them.

It’s not much, but I wanted to help in one way that I know how – by providing ideas and actionable information.
