Getting a job has never been easy, but in today’s economy it is worse than ever – even for highly qualified candidates. While many job seekers continue to rely on sites like Monster.com and Career Builder, there are a wide range of social media tools that can help you expand your search and increase your chances of landing a quality job.

Most people know that getting a referral from someone inside a company is usually your best shot at an interview. Social media offers today’s job seeker a faster, easier and more efficient way of making those critical personal connections that will lead to interviews.

However, leveraging social media in this way requires a thoughtful, focused approach to the way you build and work your network.

@WHIZ Christi Day of Southwest.

Three weeks ago Murphy-Goode began a search for a “social media whiz,” a wine enthusiast interested in moving to Healdsburg, Calif., for six months to promote the vineyard’s malbec and chardonnay on blogs, Facebook and Twitter. The job — which comes with the official title “lifestyle correspondent” — pays $10,000 a month, plus free accommodations at a private home within walking distance of the tasting room. Ms. Casgar, a former magazine marketing executive, has been endorsing herself as enthusiastically as she would a bottle of petit verdot.

The rapid rise of social networking over the past five years is nothing short of a phenomenon. In fact, according to the Nielsen Company, the New York-based media conglomerate, social networking and blogs are now more popular than e-mail.

The numbers are astonishing. Again according to Nielsen, two-thirds of the world’s Internet population visit social networking or blogging sites, accounting for almost 10% of all Internet time. “Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience.” John Burbank, Nielsen Online’s CEO, said.

Not that Tom is looking fora job, but his network is now contains thousands of influencers and thought leaders in the area, which makes value skyrocket!

There is a tool called NameChk that will allow a user to see if their username is available on multiple networks without actually testing the process. For example if you wanted the username NSR for the major networks, but it was not available on Twitter, You could try something like NSRweb or projectNSR which is more likely to still be available.

Today our founder David Gallant will be discussing the interaction between social media and the job hunt. Using the internet is vitally important to finding a job because it allows applicants to stand out of the crowd and be noticed. Also, many employers look to Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter for a first phase of research. David will be discussing how he connected with his current employer, a Boston area Marketing and PR agency with the use of Twitter.

The panel consists of David Gallant(GARFIELD GROUP), Rory Keohane(OAT PR), and Jeff Taylor(EONS, TRIBUTES, MONSTER)

###

It is said that it is nearly impossible to find a job while cold-calling HR representatives and that having a connection to a company is a necessity to finding that perfect career. Using social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, this session will cover in great detail ways to leverage the system to your advantage. Our speakers are at the heart of the online job hunt industry, having founded their own websites for job searchers or serving as examples of successful social media ventures. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear their experiences and discuss tactics for the job hunt for both employers and future employees.
