The bad news for this spring’s college graduates is that they’re entering the toughest labor market in at least 25 years.

The worse news: Even those who land jobs will likely suffer lower wages for a decade or more compared to those lucky enough to graduate in better times, studies show.

Andrew Friedson graduated last year from the University of Maryland with a degree in government and politics and a stint as student-body president on his résumé. After working on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign for a few months, Mr. Friedson hoped to get a position in the new administration. When that didn’t pan out he looked for jobs on Capitol Hill. No luck there, either.

So now, instead of learning about policymaking and legislation, he’s earning about $1,250 a month as a high-school tutor and a part-time fundraiser for Hillel, a Jewish campus organization. To save money, he’s living with his parents.

Time for a reality check: Your lack of progress in your job search isn’t due to any personal or professional deficiency, says Executive Recruiter Mark Jaffe.

Yesterday I got a press release from one Mark Jaffe, an executive recruiter with Wyatt & Jaffe. The sarcasm-laden pitch addressed the fear and desperation that have seized many job-seekers because of the recession. It also offered Jaffe’s advice for staying confident and making a good impression on potential employers.

One of Jaffe’s tips stood out, and I thought it was worth sharing. It was to not take rejection in your job search personally. His press release notes:

College seniors are graduating in one of the toughest job markets in history. Employers are looking to cut college hiring 22% this year, according to research done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Fortunately, not all the news is bad. Career experts say there are still opportunities in this market, especially for those who start the job search early and keep up the momentum.

“The worst mistake to make right now is to let yourself become paralyzed because of the recession”, said Generation Y career counselor Lindsay Pollack. “The more actions you take to find a job, the better your results will be,” Pollack said.

By introducing yourself in a professional manner online, your chances increase that someone will contact you about a open position. Recent graduates just need to know where to start.. with all the web sites out there – where do you start? You can try Jobpile – an aggregate of jobs posted on the Internet and located at: http://www.artypapers.com/jobpile Although this is a good resource, you should never rely on going to a web site, but making the web come to you by creating your own personal network – you can do it!
